The Moscow-born composer Oleg Komarnitsky (1946–98) is almost totally unknown outside Russia. This is the first CD dedicated to his music. Although Komarnitsky composed a good deal during his short life (he was only 52 when he died of a heart-attack), much of his music has since been lost – the four works on this CD are apparently all that remains from a copious output of chamber music.
The five string works here display a typically Slavic melancholy, tinged with lyricism. The piano pieces, by contrast, are buoyant and light-hearted, reminiscent of Prokofiev at his most easy-going.
