About

Faithful to his wish to bring back to life French operas that have been forgotten or rarely performed, Roberto Alagna has recorded this version of Édouard Lalo’s opera Fiesque.

Inspired by Schiller’s 'Die Verschwörung des Fiesco zu Genua' (1782), which rewrites an historical fact with 16th century Genoa as a setting (the 1547 conspiracy led by the Count of Lavagna against the Genoese), Lalo explicitly develops his political conception, which is clearly a republican manifesto!

Lalo condenses Schiller’s drama from five acts to three, readapting the characters and simplifying the action. The main subject, faithful to Schiller’s work, remains the defence of freedoms.
