La Conquista di GranataAbout
The great popularity of Italian opera in European courts and theatres transformed the genre from its early 17th-century origins as a type of court entertainment into one that quickly became internationally recognised and universally loved. In the wake of this success, other European nations developed their own local operatic traditions, but Italian opera retained its prominent role in Europe throughout the entire 19th century. It was therefore natural for composers outside of Italy to move and study there, sometimes remaining indefinitely and becoming, to all intents and purposes, composers of Italian opera. Two such composers were Mayr and Arrieta, who feature in our programme alongside their most important Italian colleagues of that period – Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini.
